Welcome to Mallorca
An island of contrast and variety, bestowed with such natural beauty and fascinating landscapes that it rarely fails to inspire. Poets,
musicians, artists are drawn by the tranquility, the vivid colours and the special light that the sun provides. Chopin, Miró, and Graves
have all made the island their home, many creative spirits still do.
Mallorca, like its people, is somewhat of an enigma — a challenge indeed for the inquisitive and adventurous.
Where better to start than the island’s famed coastline? Over 500 km of pure white sandy beaches, sheer granite cliffs topped by ruined
watch towers and small secluded coves — all surrounded by the clearest azure water in the Mediterranean. Alternatively, snorkel or scuba
to the undersea beauty of brightly coloured plants, fish and ancient wrecks. The coastline is best explored from the sea, whether in a luxury
yacht or under sail. Boating is well catered for with over 40 marinas situated around the island, berthing some of the world’s most
luxurious vessels. Motoring inland, the island offers, on its undulating plain, a genuine rural atmosphere of old olive trees, fruit orchards,
pine woods and almond trees ranged in terraces along small hillsides. As a backdrop the Tramontana mountains rise up as a towering spine that
runs the length of the island from southwest to north. To explore this breathtaking landscape, choose between a gentle train ride that runs from
Palma to Sóller, motoring the winding lanes, trekking the rugged mountain paths or soaring overhead in a balloon. The island has experienced
many changes of culture and is rich in prehistoric remains from Roman through Vandals, Byzantines to Arab Muslims and Christians. All of these
have left their mark on the scenery and produced a colourful and intriguing popular culture, not to mention remarkable gastronomic experiences.
A description of Mallorca would not be complete without mention of its capital — Palma de Mallorca. Some consider Palma to be the most
beautiful of Spain’s cities, combining a busy port with stunning architecture and many historic monuments. It is truly a city to be explored
on foot, with its winding and ancient passageways offering up a multitude of surprises — including elegant shops and boutiques, unusual bars
and restaurants, art and photographic galleries, museums and theatre.
